hundreds of people, hundreds of witnesses felt they saw a light streaking up toward the plane. how do you account for that? >> well, i account for it that they certainly saw something. the vast majority of the witnesses, when we interviewed them, heard the bang and then looked up in the sky. and it's simple physics they heard an event that happened somewhere between 30 seconds and 55 sends before they heard the bang, the speed of sound, the speed of light. so they were looking at a plane in distress that was breaking apart. and probably climbing 3,000 feet. so they saw things going up, they saw things coming off. and plus, you know, i don't mean to degrade the witnesses, they reported what they saw and they are good -- they are good americans and we appreciate their participation but eyewitness testimony is traditionally not very accurate. >> in the ten seconds i have left, sir, what do you think about the impact of reopening this, re-examining it, all these

back here on a thursday morning. of course the off us start of summer is tomorrow. we are getting a little bit of a jump on the season today with our pool here on the plaza. any day you spend at the pool, the beach or just outdoors should begin with sunscreen. and this year, there's some new federal labeling requirements for all sunscreen products. dr. susan taylor is dermatologist and she is here to sort out the important and brand-new information. doc, good morning. good to see you. >> good morning. >> so the fda now requires sunscreen products to have these brand-new labels. what's on the label? >> so the labels are going to indicate if the sunscreen is broad spectrum. >> which means what? >> mean it is protects from both uvb rays and uva rays. >> so it's gonna say that right on the product? >> right on the product. >> and you recommend it protect against both? >> that's right. and the lane will also say spf 15 or a higher number. >> all right. let's talk about some different
8:45 am
types of people and what they should know about sunscreen. >> that's right. >> there's skin tone and then there's stun type. let's start with skin tone, you're light, fair-skinned, medium toned or you have a dark complexion what do you need to know about what that requires in terms of sunscreen? >> there's one thing you need to know. that is you need to use sunscreen no matter what your race, your ethnicity or your skin tone. you must use a broad spectrum spf 30 sunscreen on a daily basis every single day. >> that's skin tone and then something called skin type. >> right. >> with moisturizers, we talk about people with dry skin what should they be choosing? >> so they are going to choose a sunscreen that is moisturizing. so it's gonna have ingredients like shea butter or different oils, even oils that will help your dry skin. >> next category? >> sensitive skin. so, there are people who are sensitive to various chemicals. you're gonna look for a sunscreen that has zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. >> what about people who have oily skin?
8:46 am
>> yes. so the opposite. you want to have an oil-free sunscreen. and it's gonna be marked right on the front of the label. >> all right. real quickly, children, one of the most important things to consider when buying sunscreen for kids? >> you want that spf 30 but you want a product that is going to say no tears. children get sunscreen in their eyes and it sting it will say no tears. >> for active people, athletes, people going to be jumping in and out of a pool, how long should the sunscreen last without a further application? >> that new regulation will indicate water resistant for 40 or 80 minutes, that's the most important thing. you will no longer see waterproof but water resistant. if you're going to be in that pool for 80 minutes, you're going to select a sunscreen 80 minutes water resistant. >> most importantly of all, don't stay in the sun all danger find an umbrella, find shade, get under it as often as possible. >> reapply the sunscreen every two hours.
8:47 am
>> let's go to savannah. water safe city another summertime priority. ten people drown in the united states every single day, two of them children under the age of 14. so, with us to teach us a little bit more about swimming safe city four-time olympic gold medalist janet evans. good morning, good to see you. >> good morning, savannah, glad to be here. >> there anything more important in terms of safety than teaching a child to swim? >> there is not. no one really realizes this, we need to teach kids to swim like we put kids in car seats. drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14 in our country. like you said you can ten drownings per year. the statistics are staggering, we need to get our kids in swim lessons. >> i want to go through tips that people can listen to of course, never swim alone. you say ideally with a lifeguard on duty. >> ideally a lifeguard on doubt tirng the problem with a lot of drownings is someone thinks someone else has an eye on their child or any child a lot of drownings happen at parties, people keep their eyes on the pool but they really don't. drownings take two minutes and they are silent. not like the movies, everyone is

8:49 am
able to demonstrate. okay, here she comes. >> okay. all right, guys, come over. okay. the most important thing for swimming is for children, obviously, to be able to go underwater and hold their breath and hold bubbles, we are going to go underwaurpd blow some bubbles, okay, ready? one, two, three. blow bubbles. so when a child feels like they can hold their breath and come up and get air that makes them feel more comfort around in the water. obviously, another school of thought, we all know how to float on our back, we fall in, we can turn over and float on our backs. so let's all float on our backs, okay? okay, all float on our backs, like that. so now when a child falls in, if they feel like they can just flip over and float on their back and breathe until help comes. >> janet evans, it is great advice. i know you have got a little swimmer there, it's in her genes. thank you so much. glad to have you here. up next, take a turn, talk about slimming swimsuits for summer. but first, this is "today" on nbc. crystal geyser is always
